Bedford Vehicles had a revamp of models in 1939 and part of it was the type O. The same cab was used on other lighter models but the Type O was built for the 3 to 5 ton owners and was available in OS - Short Wheel Base, OL - Long Wheel Base both 3-4 tonners, , OB - Bus Chassis, OT - very short wheel base Tipper, OS40, OL40 - 5 tonners. As the 2nd World War was to start almost straight away like other car and truck manufacturers they were put straight into war time production and so the Type O became a war truck with types OY - War time, OYD - General Service, OYC - Tanker, OX - Also War Time, OWB - War time Bus.
The O type had a 6 cylinder ohv 3.5 litre of 27.34hp with a 4 speed gearbox and there was a Perkins diesel option as well.
